You don’t often encounter collaborations like the one between fashion knitwear brand Chinti and Parker and the pattern visionaries at Patternity.
Founded in 2009 by photographer/art director Anna Murray and surface/product designer Grace Winteringham – who use patterns as tools to inspire, explore, and innovate – Patternity now comprises a pattern research and consultancy department, a creative studio, and an events and education hub. As part of its extremely specialized approach, Patternity works with individuals, specialists, and institutions from various industries that range from fashion and interiors to science and technology.
Also founded in 2009, Chinti and Parker started out with the mission “to create beautiful, ethically made garments that value style on par with substance.” In this spirit, founders Anna Singh and Rachael Wood only use premium natural materials to launch “a new era of style and luxury, one that is built on integrity and sustainability, and one that far outlives seasonal trends.”
For the AW13 season, the two teams joined forces to create a 28-piece capsule collection that merges Chinti and Parker’s signature knitted silhouettes with Patternity’s love for “seeing pattern everywhere” – and the results are impressive. Heavily influenced by the stark and striking shapes and grids of urban buildings, the range highlights craftsmanship as well as an eye for bold and monochrome patterns interspersed with flashes of mint and nude – a delightful sight for sore eyes. All of the patterns on display were “inspired by the basic building blocks of the urban city that frame our everyday lives” according to the premise of “conscious cloth meets conscious pattern.”
Now, the results of their collaboration are not only beautiful, but also sustainable: The collection was deliberately designed to raise awareness of the world around us and to reconnect our senses to the shapes and colors of our surroundings. But that’s not all: Patternity Studio art-directed the entire collection from start to finish, developed the branding concept, and co-directed the accompanying film.
