The Question and Answer article series joins two creative minds from a range of backgrounds to better understand the transformation of our cities. Enjoy at blog Booooooom’s intriguing question and playground designer MONSTRUM’s insightful answer.
We query computers for answers dozens of times each day, and the search results ultimately rob us of opportunities to wonder. It is important to wonder! Kids need opportunities to experience mystery and adventure in real-world environments so they can spend time wondering, exploring, and exercising their brain muscles.
Booooooom asks: How can we provide opportunities for kids to make real-life discoveries on their own instead of Googling and Youtubing everything?
MONSTRUM answers: Children spend more and more time in front of the computer and less time in the busy streets of urban environments. This is certainly not due to their needs, but to a lack of room for children in these spaces. MONSTRUM creates magical playgrounds that provide a reason for children to leave the house and a safe environment in which they can explore and wonder.
MONSTRUM was founded in 2003, and since then its team of artists, designers and skilled builders have been creating playgrounds where more than just physical activities and play evolve; the visual story that informs the spaces allows fantasies to thrive.
MONSTRUM believes that playground design should be a reflection of the world surrounding us. They see the world as a place full of color and joy. They meet boys that like pink and girls who like climbing trees. Why only play on a swing and in a sandbox when you can play adventure in a moon rocket, or a submarine, or a giant spider, or an enormous snail, or a Trojan Horse, or a whale, or an ant, or a princess’ castle? Fantasy is infinite, and children will certainly forget all about Google and Youtube once they’ve experienced the worlds MONSTRUM creates.
